If you are expecting a baby, your life is about to get very busy. You will have doctor’s appointments, and baby showers. You will be busy getting a nursery ready, buying bottles and diapers, picking out clothes, and of course a name for your new arrival. With a new baby coming, you won’t have time for dental problems. Getting a cleaning and exam before your delivery date will be one less thing you will need to worry about when the baby comes, and your dentist will be able to fix any problems before the big day.

If you are pregnant, or think you might be, you should let the dentist and her staff know. If you have a non-emergency procedure, the dentist may decide to wait until later. The best time to see your dentist while pregnant is during your second trimester. This is when it will be the most comfortable for you, and safest for your baby. Your dentist may want to hold off on taking x-rays, or may want to have you wear a lead lined apron and collar to protect your baby and your thyroid.

Morning sickness is a part of being pregnant, which means throwing up. Acid from your stomach will end up in your mouth which can impact your enamel. After a bout of morning sickness, you should rinse your mouth with water, and brush 30 minutes afterward to prevent the acids from damaging your teeth. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can increase your risk of gum disease, and there is also a condition known as “pregnancy tumors”. These are overgrowths on your gums, which are benign. However, your dentist can remove them if they cause you problems. During your pregnancy, the best thing that you can do for your teeth is to brush twice a day for two minutes at a time, and to floss at least once a day.
